Hello, my name is Heather and I love being a therapist! I am passionate about working with people, making connections and helping others. I knew when I took my first psychology course at age 16 that this is what I was meant to do. I have now been in the field for 20 years and I still love what I do.
In my career, I have worked as an emergency response counselor, in group homes with teen boys, in residential treatment centers with teenagers, with foster parents, kinship providers, with foster children and adopted children, in an acute psychiatric children's hospital, in a sensory processing clinic, and in counseling centers treating families, couples and individuals. Through all of my experiences, I learned from every client and family I worked with and I now use that knowledge as a therapist in private practice. No matter where I was working, it is universal that people need connection. I love connecting with others, learning about their strengths and helping them to see a different perspective and to find possibility in any situation.
As a result of my passion for therapy, I have spent countless hours learning from experienced and brilliant therapists and psychologists. Some of my specialties include:
PACT Pyschobiological Attachment Couples Therapy Level II with Stan Tatkin PhD, MFT
Attachment Focused Family Therapy with Dan Hughes, PhD http://www.danielhughes.org/about.html
Emotionally Focused Therapy
Gottman Method Level II with John and Julie Gottman
Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT)
EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing) Therapy
In my spare time, I also teach at the University of Colorado, Denver. It is really fun to teach young people about the topics I feel so passionate about and to see them light up with curiosity.
When I'm not having fun at work, I really enjoy hanging out with my three sons, who always keep me on my toes. I also enjoy training my rambunctious young dog, although the bet is still out on who trains who. Additionally, I love running, hiking, playing with my friends, reading, skiing, traveling, and watching TED Talks.
